First Highway Ltd are experts in the installation, maintenance and repair of tarmac driveways. Patented by English inventor Edgar Purnell Hooley in 1902, tarmac has been a popular surfacing material choice for over a hundred years. It is made from a mix of aggregates and tar, which is laid onto a pre-prepared surface as a hot liquid, typically at a temperature between 95°C and 190°C. This is then rolled while still hot to ensure there are minimum air voids in the mix. The result is a highly strong and durable surface once cooled.
Tarmac is one of the most affordable materials for a new driveway. It is also easy to maintain and fast to repair, making it a popular choice with many of our clients in Sittingbourne and the surrounding Kent areas.
Our tarmac driveway installation service includes all the initial groundworks requirements. Before laying the sub-base and tarmac, we will excavate and prepare the site, installing edging to help retain the structure. The sub-base is then laid in order to create a smooth and level base for the tarmac. We use a quality sub-base material, such as crushed limestone, which we level and then compact with a roller. Following this, our experts apply tarmac in two layers; a base course at 50mm to 70mm thick after rolling and a top course at 25mm to 40mm thick after rolling. This creates a smooth and strong surface.
As experienced driveway specialists, we are fully equipped to handle driveway installations and repairs of any size anywhere in Kent, including Canterbury, Gravesend and Maidstone.
